Partnering for Scientific-Software Ecosystem Opportunities (PESO)

Description

This is a DOE Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) initiative dedicated to stewarding and advancing the scientific software ecosystem that underpins computational science, high-performance computing (HPC), and AI-enabled research. Rather than developing individual scientific applications, PESO focuses on ecosystem-level capabilities that improve how scientific software is integrated, delivered, sustained, and adopted across the research community.

Working in partnership with the Consortium for the Advancement of Scientific Software (CASS), national laboratories, universities, industry, and open-source communities, PESO provides leadership in software integration, software quality assurance, user and developer experience, impact assessment, workforce development, and community engagement. The project also stewards foundational ecosystem technologies—including Spack and E4S—that enable reproducible software deployment and interoperable scientific computing environments across diverse HPC platforms.

PESO builds on the software investments and community practices established through the Exascale Computing Project (ECP), helping ensure that DOE-funded scientific software remains sustainable, interoperable, accessible, and responsive to emerging computing architectures and scientific challenges. By strengthening the software ecosystem as a whole, PESO enables researchers, facilities, and software teams to deliver scientific discoveries more efficiently and with greater long-term impact.

BNL contributes to PESO's integration and workflow-technology activities. The BNL effort focuses on making workflow software easier to package, test, document, integrate, and sustain across DOE high-performance computing environments: supporting and delivering Spack packages for workflow-related software, building and integrating workflow-technology SDKs, enhancing CI infrastructure, and producing workflow-oriented documentation and tutorials.
